Language

Students in third grade reach a critical juncture in their language development. While the focus continues on literacy skills, there's a transition from phonics to a broader scope including vocabulary acquisition, comprehension strategies, text analysis, language conventions, and writing. Proficiency in reading and effective expression through writing become key objectives.

Reading
  • Proficiency in comprehending a diverse range of grade-level literature, including fables, folktales, myths, poetry, and drama

  • Understanding the elements of narrative text and deepening comprehension through theme analysis

  • Developing character analysis skills and employing prompts or structures to assist in character analysis

Writing
  • Daily explicit instruction in writing, progressively introducing skills, strategies, and structures for effective writing

  • Writing opinion pieces, informational/explanatory texts, and narratives, showcasing structured organization and clear expression of ideas

  • Utilizing technology to produce, publish, and collaborate on writing tasks, including short research projects

Vocabulary
  • Mastery of English language conventions, including subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, pronouns, adjectives, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling

  • Acquisition and application of a broad range of vocabulary, distinguishing shades of meaning, nuances, and literal vs. nonliteral meanings of words and phrases

  • Recognition and utilization of appropriate vocabulary in both written and spoken language, enhancing overall communication skills
